Members of Royal Brooks family gathered on November 9 for the dedication and unveiling of a historical marker in his honor. In February 1948, as Brooks was boarding a bus at the Grenta ferry landing, he offered to swap nickels for a woman ahead of him who had boarded the wrong bus. The bus driver became angered and hailed Grenta police officer Alvin Bladsacker, who walked Brooks about a block from the bus stop and shot him twice in the back.
