City announces opening of twelve additional pools

6th June 2011   ·   0 Comments

NEW ORLEANS, LA — Today, June 6, 2011, the City will open twelve pools across New Orleans, an increase from only eight pools last year.

“Increasing productive summer opportunities for our kids is vital to our city’s well-being,” said Mayor Landrieu. “With all of our revamped summer programs under way, it’s important that our kids get an opportunity to learn how to swim. Our partnership with the American Red Cross this summer is raising the bar to provide the kind of programming our children deserve.”

“To have 12 pools opening in top condition, complete with Red Cross trained lifeguards, on time for summer vacation is a miraculous achievement,” said City Council President and NORD Commissioner Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson. “We are so grateful, and so happy that the children of the City will have a choice of safe places to cool off this summer.”

Approximately 6,600 residents will be served by swimming lessons and aquatics programming year round in 2011, compared to approximately 500 in 2010. New pool openings include A.L. Davis in Central City, Sam Bonart in the Lower 9th Ward, Joe Brown Indoor Pool in New Orleans East, and Taylor in Hoffman Triangle.

In December 2010, Mayor Landrieu announced that the City entered into an agreement with the American Red Cross Southeast Louisiana Chapter to fund a year-round swimming lesson and lifeguard training program, under the direction of NORDC, to include:
• Fall and Spring swimming lessons in collaboration with the University of New Orleans, Tulane University Reilly Center, Lake Pontchartrain Lake Basin Foundation, and Ashley Marie Kelly Foundation;
• Lifeguard training for NORDC’s aquatics staff.
This is the first time since Hurricane Katrina that the Red Cross swimming program in New Orleans is fully funded.
