The Rev. Frederick Douglas Reese accepted the Congressional Gold Medal on behalf of the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery marchers from House Speaker Paul Ryan, who along with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, to Ryan’s right, are refusing to advance legislation restoring provisions of the Voting Rights Act struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.
